Know the Differences: Not All Fire Inspections Are Equal

November 11, 2020

Facing extreme conditions can cause wear and tear on your equipment that can mean the difference between life and death. Is your inspection company performing the required tests per the NFPA standards? Water way tests and structural bolt torque inspections can improve the functional safety of your fleet. However, some companies treat these as add-ons rather than mandatory elements of a complete inspection. In this presentation, UL expert Chris Baker will address:

- An overview of NFPA 1911 and 1932
- What you should know going into your next fire equipment inspection
- What a proper inspection entails (and how to make sure you’re getting one)

Presenter:  Chris Baker, Senior Field Engineer, Subject Matter Expert in Fire Equipment Services (FES), UL

EMS in America and the Next Pandemic

October 29, 2020

This webinar presented a robust discussion of the state of EMS in America in 2020. The subject matter experts, Dr. James Augustine (2020 IAFC President Award Winner) and Fire Chief Bruce Varner (2001 International Fire Chief of the Year) offered their opinions on the status of the state of the EMS with an eye towards being prepared for the next pandemic. Most experts say it’s not if there will be another, if is when will it occur, so now is the time to get ready for the next one to hit our Nation.

Former Fire Chief of both Atlanta and Washington, DC, Dennis L. Rubin was the Panel Moderator and your program host. Don’t miss your chance to learn from these two proven leaders!

Making the Case for the Half-Story in Your Size-Up

May 18, 2021

Painting a picture of what the first arriving fire unit encounters is vital when giving the initial fire scene size up. Being able to accurately and effectively communicate the current situation to other responding units is a good first step in working towards a successful outcome to an emergency. By clearly stating the conditions, occupancy type and construction features, we are giving responding units the ability to formulate their own pre-arrival plans. Communicating the presence of a half-story in a residential occupancy informs incoming units to much more than just a construction feature. This webinar will discuss how the life safety and operational implications can be much greater for both occupants and responders when we encounter fires in a residence with a half-story.

Presenter:  Nick Esposito

How Clean is Your Turnout Gear?

November 17, 2020

It is no secret that prolonged exposure to contaminated fire gear has adverse health effects and results in a higher likelihood of cancer among fire service professionals. While the PPE service providers are required to be verified, and perform testing to demonstrate cleaning effectiveness, many fire departments also perform their own in-house cleaning. If you want to know if your cleaning agents are effective at removing contaminants, make sure you join us as we discuss:

- An overview and updates to NFPA 1851
- Testing performed when verifying an Independent Service Provider (ISP) for PPE cleaning
- How UL can help you improve your in-house gear cleaning through testing

Presenter:  Amanda Newsom, Principal Engineer, UL

Community Risk Reduction Heroes

August 26, 2020

Community Risk Reduction (CRR) initiatives must be a priority of the 21st century fire service. CRR is a medley of fire inspections, company level inspections (pre-planning), building code compliance/enforcement and public education. There is a lot of opportunity via social media to have a broad and effective outreach program across multiple social media platforms, in order to reach your municipality.  It’s essential to give priority to gathering, analyzing and acting on emergency response and inspection data. Join us as our panelists discuss the importance of these priorities, methods, and practices.

Presenters: Reginald Freeman, MS, FIFireE, CFO  Fire Chief – Emergency Management Director, City of Hartford (CT)

Dan Munsey, Fire Chief, San Bernardino County Fire Protection District (CA)

Derrick J. V. Sawyer, MS, EFO, NJCEM, Fire Director / Emergency Management Coordinator, Trenton Fire & Emergency Services (NJ)

Team Dynamics: How to Build an Effective Team in the Firehouse for the Fireground

April 29, 2021

Just lead. A simple statement that implies that leadership is simple. It isn’t. Part of being an effective leader is building an effective team and it’s not just a matter of telling people to work well together. The age old axiom that applies, “if it was easy, anyone could do it”. It ain’t easy. In order for any crew to achieve success on the fireground, they must first achieve success in the firehouse. That success is measured in how much they trust the leader, as well as the team they are working with. In order to achieve that trust a leader must understand what goes into the ideas and concepts behind team development, formation and lifecycle, and cohesion. We will explore these elements and more, drawing on experiences born from the fire service and the military so that they can be applied in a very specific environment, the firehouse. Achieving that goal is what allows effective fireground leaders to apply their craft on the street, without it, you’ve got a herd of individuals destined to fail.

Presenter:  Marc Davidson, Captain & Professional Development Training Coordinator, Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department
